Strategic Advisor for Manufacturing Businesses: Seeing the Whole Business Changes What You See in the Problem

30+ Years Across the Moving Parts of Business

For more than 30 years, Maureen has worked across the moving parts of business - finance, operations, people, systems, processes and organisational change - in both multinational environments and owner-led SMEs.

That cross-functional experience shaped a different way of looking at operational problems. Poor communication may not begin with communication. An accountability issue may not begin with the person carrying it. A system problem may expose something much deeper in the way decisions, information or ownership move through the business.

Rather than viewing each function in isolation, Maureen looks at the connections between them: where pressure originates, what it affects elsewhere and where capable people have become responsible for carrying what the operating structure should.

That perspective became The Chain Reaction Framework™ - a proprietary lens for understanding why successful manufacturing businesses can become harder to run as they grow, and what needs to change to create greater capacity without increasing dependency on the owner or key people.

From the Financial Core to Whole-Business Transformation

My career began in finance, but I was never particularly good at staying inside the lines of a finance role.

Working first in multinational environments and then for more than 20 years inside owner-led SMEs gave me access to far more than the numbers. I worked across finance, operations, people, systems, purchasing, processes and organisational change - often wherever the business needed something understood, connected or moved forward.

Over time, I noticed the same pattern repeatedly. The issue presenting itself was rarely the whole issue. A finance problem could originate in operations. A people problem could expose an unclear process. A system problem could reveal weak ownership.

Purchasing and production problems could ultimately trace back to how BOMs were being managed in engineering. A decision made in one part of the business could create pressure somewhere completely different.

And as businesses grew, another pattern became increasingly obvious: capable owners and good people compensated. They filled the gaps, carried knowledge, made the decisions, worked around weak processes and kept things moving. It worked - until the very people making the business successful became part of the structure holding it together.

That experience taught me to look beyond individual symptoms and follow the connections between them. To ask not only, "What is going wrong here?" but "What is this connected to? Where did the pressure actually begin? And what is carrying the weight now?"

I've worked with Maureen for 17+ years, with both of us wearing many different hats along the way. Whatever our roles, she has always been high on my list as a go-to person for clarity. In that time, we've seen business through every stage of its cycle, against the backdrop of Ireland's ever-changing economy, from recession through to recovery and growth. Together we've faced the challenge of voluntary liquidations (Exide Batteries), the energy of start-ups (Europa) and the opportunity of a buyout (Ecobat). Through the highs and the hard times alike, Maureen has been a constant. Her broad skill set, careful planning and focus on delivering objectives have steered each of these journeys to a successful outcome. She has worked with a wide range of people and cultures across many different markets, and she has earned their trust and respect every time. She has a rare ability to see the bigger picture while stripping a business right back to its core, making sure the foundations are right before piecing it all back together. Her expertise spans Finance, Operations, HR, Stock and Project Management, and she's some woman for one woman. She handles change effortlessly and brings the team along with ease and patience. She's an accountant by trade, but to be fair, she's the least accountanty person I've ever met. She brings calm and confidence to every business issue she takes on, and she's a huge support to any company with a vision of growth and improved efficiencies. I feel privileged to have worked with her over the years, and I'm glad we still get the chance to work together from time to time. I continue to value her loyalty and friendship. Everyone should have a Maureen in their business and in their life!

The Philosophy Behind The Chain Reaction Framework™

The Chain Reaction Framework™ is a proprietary lens for understanding why growth can create more pressure instead of more capacity.

It looks beyond individual problems, departments and symptoms to reveal how operational pressure moves through a business - where it originates, what it affects elsewhere, where capacity is being lost and where hidden dependencies have developed around the owner or key people.

This matters because the problem demanding the most attention is not always where the problem started. Poor communication, inconsistent accountability, recurring firefighting, overloaded key people or systems that aren't delivering can appear to be separate issues when they are often connected by something happening deeper within the operating structure.

The Chain Reaction Framework™ makes those connections visible, so the business can address what is creating the pressure rather than continuing to solve the same problems in different forms.

Commercially, that means clearer priorities, stronger ownership, greater capacity and an operating structure better equipped to support sustainable growth.

Establishing Operational Clarity: The Required Diagnostic

That is why every engagement begins with The Chain Reaction™ Pressure Map.

The Pressure Map is an on-site strategic diagnostic. I come into the business to listen, observe and ask questions, looking at how information, decisions and work actually move across the organisation - not simply how they're supposed to.

It traces where operational pressure originates, how it travels through the business, where capacity is being lost and where the owner or key people are compensating for gaps elsewhere.

Within seven working days, you'll receive written findings and three priority actions, followed by a 30-minute strategic review.

If the findings show that deeper support is needed, the Pressure Map provides the starting point for The Chain Reaction™ Partnership. The work that follows is shaped by what the business actually needs rather than a predetermined programme.

Working Best With Experienced Business Owners

The Chain Reaction Logo - B2B Operational Advisory for Manufacturing SMEs

Who I Work Best With

I work best with experienced business owners who have built something successful and know the business has reached a point where the way it operates needs to evolve.

They don't need to have the answer, but they do need to be willing to look honestly at what's happening across the business - including the possibility that the issue they came in wanting to solve may not be where the pressure actually starts.

The best work happens with owners who value straight conversations, involve the right people, are open to having assumptions challenged and are prepared to act on what the business reveals.

They're not looking for someone to take the business off their hands; they want an experienced strategic partner who can see across the organisation, ask the questions that need asking and work alongside them to build a stronger way forward.

Standards of Engagement

Good work requires honesty about what is actually happening in the business, not what should be happening on paper.

I expect open access to the information and people relevant to the work, honest conversations about what's working and what isn't, and a willingness to follow the evidence even when it challenges an existing assumption or way of working. Leadership needs to remain involved.

Decisions need owners, agreed actions need follow-through, and responsibility for change stays within the business - my role is to bring the perspective, challenge and structure needed to move the work forward, not to become another person the business depends on.

We won't introduce change for the sake of change. What is already working stays, what needs strengthening gets strengthened, and what is no longer serving the business gets challenged.
